So YouTube is offering a free trial for YouTube Red (a service that removes ad’s from the site) during the BEST season for Ad Rev. YouTube is asking its creators to work for less during the time they make the most. I regret my previous post supporting Red. But every update they have made has made it worst for smaller channels. From making it that Red User revenue would go to channels they don’t even watch, to what you see now. This is a huge stab in the back for the content creators who populate content.
If you want to support creators do not go Red, not at least til January. Animators and smaller channels usually make the biggest chunk of money during October-December due to the holiday push for ad’s. In January the CPM drop for ads dramatically and this would have been a more appropriate time as it would not effect the creators as drastically. But to do it in the middle of the holiday rush is soul crushing.
If you care about the content creators please do not subscribe to the YouTube Red during the free trial period. A lot of users, myself including were counting on the ad-rev for next year.
UPDATE (10/29/2015, π AM): Google will pay YouTubers during the free trial month… sorta.
Creators are the lifeblood of YouTube. So with Google Play Music subscribers instantly joining YouTube Red, we will pay a portion of the revenue we receive from these subscribers to our creators on day 1.
What that tells my sleep-deprived brain is that the pie that was previously just divided among musicians will, for this first month of YouTube Red, now be split among musicians and YouTubers, making everyone’s slice that much smaller.
Put another way, they’re robbing Peter, Paul and Mary to pay PewDiePie for the first month. (Nothing against PewDiePie. His videos aren’t for me. It’s just that his name is the first one that came to my mind.)
Google, can you please just stop fucking up? Red’s implementation is shrouded in more secrecy now than it was last week. Typically it gets clearer after a big announcement like this, but this is doing nothing but getting worse. Considering how many people make a living off of YouTube, you should know how your shit’s gonna work before you announce it.
What you’re doing, I don’t even.
